That standard supply system in our country is 240 volt AC but the luminaires and fans which in Indian trains work on 110V DC supply system. This is to ensure passenger safety with economy.

Trains are working on axle driven system which is based on 110V DC supply. This system is more reliable and capable, of handling increases load. Coaches with D.C. alternators are driven from coach axle through flat belt or belts on pulleys. This system is generating 110V DC electricity through which all the equipment in boggies are operated.

Passenger safety being a primary concern, 110V DC system is used because it is comparatively safer then the 240V AC supply. While voltage cannot kill a person, it is the current flowing through a human body, which can be fatal. At 240 volts, the resistance of our body can draw twice the current and due to threshold it may kill anyone. Typically human body resistance with dry skin is in the range of 1000 to 2000 ohm, Hence by giving the supply of 110V DC. We are reducing this value and can protect a person from fatality. Hence 110V supply is safer than 240V.
